光化学污染氮氧化物(nox)主要是指一氧化氮和二氧化氮。no和no2都是对人体有害的气体。氮氧化物和碳氢化合物(hc)在大气环境中受强烈的太阳紫外线照射后产生一种新的二次污染物——光化学烟雾，在这种复杂的光化学反应过程中，主要生成光化学氧化剂(主要是臭氧)及其他多种复杂的化合物，统称光化学烟雾。经过研究表明，在北纬60度～南纬60度之间的一些大城市，都可能发生光化学烟雾。光化学烟雾主要发生在阳光强烈的夏、秋季节。随着光化学反应的不断进行，反应生成物不断蓄积，光化学烟雾的浓度不断升高，约3h～4h后达到最大值。这种光化学烟雾可随气流飘移数百公里，使远离城市的农村庄稼也受到损害。
