磁层 在天体周围被空间等离子体包围并受天体磁场控制的区域。许多天体都具有磁场，绝大部分宇宙物质以等离子体形式存在，所以磁层在宇宙中是很普遍的。磁层一词最早是戈尔德(T.Gold)在1959年研究太阳风与地球磁场相互作用时提出来的，当时专指地球磁层，随着对其他天体磁层的探测和研究逐渐增多，磁层一词就泛指所有天体的磁层。 直接探测证明,太阳系中的水星、地球、木星和土星都具有较强的磁场,太阳风流过它们时都形成磁层(见行星磁层)。太阳及其行星际磁场一同在星际空间运动,排斥星际介质而形成的日球，就是太阳磁层。由于等离子体的密度和速度以及星体磁矩的大小和方向等不同，磁层的尺度和结构也有很大差异。 磁层研究虽已由地球磁层扩展到行星磁层，但地球磁层还是人类有能力直接探测并详细研究的唯一空间区域，是研究的重点，地球磁层具有很复杂的磁层结构和密度变化范围很宽的等离子体。研究地球磁层，有助于对其他天体磁层的了解。
