晚新生代大冰期又称第四纪大冰期。晚新生代发生大规模冰川作用的时期。第三纪中期,全球气候开始转冷,自然地理带向中低纬度带及海拔低处推移,极地冰盖范围扩大,中低纬度的高山也发生冰川作用。除南极冰期始于第三纪中期外,其余地区多属第四纪冰期,距今24o万年前至距今1万年前。第四纪冰期的冰川规模很大,北半球大冰盖的南缘在欧洲抵达北纬50°左右,在北美大陆一直推进到北纬40°以南;南极洲的冰盖也比现今大得多。据估计,在晚更新世末次冰期的最盛时期,世界大陆有32%的面积被冰川覆盖,冰川总面积为现今的3倍,海平面下降130米左右,气温较今低3~7~11℃。第四纪大冰期的来临,对自然环境的演变及人类的进化部产生重大影响。
