磁暴磁暴geomagneticstorm全球性的强烈地磁场扰动。所谓强烈是相对其他地磁扰动而言。其实磁暴时地面地磁场变化幅度较其平时的稳定值是很微小的。在中低纬度地区,地面地磁场变化量很少有超过几百纳特的,而地磁场宁静值一般都超过3万纳特。一般的磁暴都需要在地磁台用专门仪器作系统观测才能发现。磁暴是常见现象,不发生磁暴的月份是很少的。当太阳活动增强时,可能1个月发生数次。磁暴期间,地磁场的磁偏角和垂直分量都有明显起伏,但最具特征的是地磁场水平分量的变化。大多数磁暴开始时,水平分量陡然上升,在中低纬度的地磁台站,其上升幅度约10~20纳特。这称为磁暴急始。磁暴开始急,发展快,恢复慢,一般须持续3天才逐渐恢复平静。有的磁暴没有急始,称为缓始型磁暴。磁暴的成因与太阳活动特别是太阳耀斑的出现有关。耀斑的喷出物在其前缘形成激波,以1000千米/秒的速度,约经1天,传到地球。当激波扫过地球时,磁层就突然被压缩,造成地球一侧的磁场增强。磁暴引起电离层暴从而干扰短波无线电通讯;磁暴有可能干扰电工、磁工设备的运行,还有可能干扰磁测量工作。
