红土  在湿润的热带和亚热带地区,岩石经强烈氧化和脱水作用,碱和碱金属及硅酸溶失,铁、铝氢氧化物残留富集而成的土。红土外观一般呈棕红色,粘粒含量一般均大于40~50%,属粘土。红土的矿物成分以高岭石、多水高岭石为主,并含针铁矿和三水铝石,间或含伊利石和石英。大量存在的铁、铝氢氧化物为两性胶体,在高温、多雨的酸性环境中多荷正电,与荷负电的粘土颗粒牢固地胶结起来,形成其特殊的团聚体结构(见图)。红土的孔隙比大、压缩性低、强度高,是较好的天然地基和筑坝材料。      在红土区建设时需注意其厚度的不均匀变化和天然湿度随深度增加而变大所引起的强度降低,以及因土洞的发育而带来的不利影响等问题。红土在陆地表面上的分布仅次于黄土。在中国北纬35°以南的广大地区有广泛的分布。
