叠层石叠层石stromatolites由生物作用(主要是蓝绿藻和细菌)和沉积作用的相互影响而形成的一种生物沉积结构。通常由一系列的碳酸盐纹层堆积成各种不同的形态,而纹层的形成与藻类生长周期有关。最老的叠层石发现在西澳大利亚距今35.2亿年的岩石中。叠层石在晚元古代最为繁盛,中奥陶世后开始衰落,但至今在一些海湾和湖河中仍有少量现代叠层石存在。叠层石生长环境极为多样,从海滨潮间带至潮下带,从海洋至淡水湖泊均有分布。目前,世界上一些地质学家和古生物学家已广泛运用叠层石组合特征划分晚前寒武纪地层,划分精度达2亿年左右。一些由叠层石组成的石灰岩具鲜艳的色彩和美丽的花纹,可作高级建筑材料用。
