灰树蛙是因其身体的主要颜色为灰色而得其名。它们可以是呈浅或深灰色,或是呈浅灰色加上深灰色、黑色、黄色或绿色的斑纹。跟其他北美洲的无尾目物种相比之下,它们的体型较为小,一般长不超于4到5厘米。它们的皮肤粗糙,表面有疣。事实上它们跟可普灰树蛙(Hylachrysoscelis)是一样的,唯一的不同之处只是它们叫声的分别。可普灰树蛙和灰树蛙的后腿均有橙色的斑点,这是它们跟其他树蛙的明显相异之处。这两种树蛙均是两性异形的。雄性的灰树蛙的颈部呈黑色或灰色,而雌性的颈部则呈较雄性浅的颜色。灰树蛙的蝌蚪身体滚圆。若环境的条件好,食物充裕的话,则变态过程可短达2周。在变态时,小灰树蛙通常会有一两天变为绿色,而这以后,它们才会变为灰色。分布地及行为
灰树蛙分布的范围很广泛,在美国东部,即西至德克萨斯州中部的大部分地区均可找到它们。它们亦分布于加拿大安大略省、曼尼托巴和新伯伦瑞克。灰树蛙主要是在树木栖息的,一般都不会离开固定水源太远。在下雨的晚上,它们时常会在池塘的浅水区中叫鸣。它们是夜行性动物(nocturnalanimal),主要的食物为昆虫,而这些昆虫通常都是它们有能力捕捉的小型节肢动物。它们会在春夏两节进行交配。
