恒河恒河Ganges南亚第一大河。主源在喜马拉雅山脉南坡加姆尔的甘戈特里冰川,最远支流达中国境内。上源为两条西南流向河流——阿勒格嫩达河、帕吉勒提河。两河流经印度,在代沃布勒亚格附近汇合后始称恒河;继续奔腾下泻,穿过西瓦利克山脉,在古城赫尔德瓦尔附近流入平原,此后转东南流向,至安拉阿巴德与亚穆纳河会合后转向东流,进入中游河段,河道弯曲蜿蜒,沿途接纳了哥格拉河、宋河、干达克河、戈西河、古格里河等支流,于巴加尔普尔以下进入孟加拉国境内。入孟加拉国不久进入下游河段,并分成数条支流,在瓜伦多卡德附近与南亚另一大河布拉马普特拉河汇合。两河巨大的水量冲积出世界上最大的三角洲——恒河三角洲,最后注入孟加拉湾。恒河沿岸的瓦拉纳西市风光河流长约2580千米,流域面积90.5万平方千米。上游河段流经喜马拉雅山地,谷狭流急,河床由海拔3000米急降至300米。河水补给大部分来源于3~5月的喜马拉雅山冰雪融水,最小流量200立方米/秒,最大流量在季风期时达近6000立方米/秒,是典型山地河流。平原河段地势平坦,河床坡度仅0.1米/千米。接纳各支流后,水量大增,河面展宽,河道弯曲,且全段皆可通航。恒河三角洲面积5.70万平方千米,是广阔肥沃的冲积平原,海拔仅10米,三角洲内河网密布,渠道纵横,是孟加拉国水稻、小麦、甘蔗、黄麻主要产区。也是世界上人口最稠密的地区之一。恒河水力资源丰富,河口平均流量约3.5万立方米/秒。自流入平原后,主要靠雨水补给,受南亚热带季风气候影响,年内水位变化很大。每年6~9月为雨季,最高水位常达15米以上,河水挟带大量泥沙在下游淤积,致使河床抬升,洪涝不断。印度在平原河段建有用于发电、灌溉的水利工程,如赫尔德瓦尔的上恒河渠,纳罗拉的下恒河渠、北方邦的萨尔达渠等。1970年又在距孟加拉国边境约20千米的恒河上建成法拉卡水坝,拦截恒河水改道加尔各答,使孟加拉国在枯水期时发生严重水荒。沿岸城市坎普尔、安拉阿巴德、瓦拉纳西、巴特那等均是重要工商业中心。在印度,恒河被印度教徒奉为圣河,每年有数百万的印度教徒前往沐浴(见恒河沐浴)。
