沟鞭藻类(化石)(goubianzao lei 一类具两根鞭毛的单细胞浮游植物,属甲藻门横裂甲藻纲(Dimophyceae)及纵裂甲藻纲(Desmophyceae)。形态多样,有球形、卵形、菱形、五边形、鼎形等。大小为 20~250微米,沟鞭藻重要的特征是具沟,横沟呈螺旋状环绕于甲的赤道部位,纵沟位于腹部与横沟大致垂直。沟中各具一根鞭毛。横鞭毛从腹部靠前的鞭毛孔伸出,波动于沟中;纵鞭毛从腹部靠后的鞭毛孔中伸出,拖于体后。靠鞭毛的摆动,使甲作旋涡式运动。沟鞭藻的名称即源于此。其动甲由多角形的甲片组成,其数目及排列方式即板式是动甲的分类基础,壁由纤维素组成。生活史包括动甲及孢囊两个阶段,当动甲遇不利的环境或坚硬食物需消化,或繁殖的一个过程,在甲内分泌出有机质膜包围原生质而形成孢囊进入休眠期,脱囊时囊壁沿固定的线裂开,原生质由裂口处流出,形成新的动甲。现今地面上各种水体都有现生沟鞭藻的分布,辽阔的海洋最适宜它的生长,并构成食物链的基础。化石沟鞭藻都是休眠期的孢囊,有贴近式孢囊、刺孢囊、腔孢囊及贴近刺式孢囊;化石状态下根据①板式,即壁部不同类型的缝线、隔壁及突起;②有横沟或纵沟;③背部有古口(由失去一块或一组板片而成);④具多甲藻形轮廓等判断为沟鞭藻(据其中任一条件均可)。确凿的地质记录始于距今约两亿年前的三叠纪,中生代晚期到新生代沟鞭藻迅速演化,不但数量丰富,且属种分异度极高,不少属种具较短的地质历程及广泛的地理分布,成为划分对比地层、恢复古生态的重要化石,也是生成石油的重要物源。当前生物学家趋于将动甲与孢囊结合起来,依板式、古口类型加之同一属种可产生不同类型的孢囊,目前尚不能建立一个无争议的分类系统。
