赤道潜流赤道潜流equatorialundercurrent赤道附近海域次表层中的海流。处于赤道流之下，中层水之上。与表层南北赤道流的流向相反，自西向东流动，流速较表层的赤道流大。所在的次表层是一个温跃层。1952年首次由T.克伦威尔在太平洋发现，命名为克伦威尔海流。以后在大西洋和印度洋都发现了这种潜流。就太平洋而言，赤道附近海域从海面至深度为50～100米的表层，是温度均匀的暖水层，其下至深度约300米处为温跃层，即赤道潜流所在的次表层。赤道潜流的厚度约200米，流幅（宽度）约300千米，约介于南纬2°至北纬2°之间；流轴大致与温跃层一致，最大流速达1.5米／秒，流量约为4.0×107米3／秒，流长约为1.4万千米，几乎横跨了太平洋。大西洋赤道潜流与此相近。印度洋面主要受季风控制，在赤道处的风主要是经向的，随季节更替而改变方向。故每年11月～次年的3月吹北风，5～9月吹南风，都不能产生赤道潜流；只有在3～4月才有印度洋的赤道潜流。
