湖口 中国古代长江中游江防要塞。位于今江西省九江市东35公里鄱阳湖入长江口处。西北濒临长江，东南背倚低山，南有上钟山控湖，北有下钟山扼江，历来有江湖锁钥之称。西南之鞋山（又名大孤山）屹立湖中，与上、下钟山势成犄角，共扼鄱阳湖出入长江咽喉，控东西水路交通要冲，历来为兵家必争之地（见彩图）。南朝宋刘裕设湖口戍。齐、梁、陈时期为戍守要地。唐武德年间置湖口镇。南唐升元二年(938),设湖口县，属江州（今九江）。元至正二十三年(1363)秋，农民起义军吴国公朱元璋与自立为汉帝的陈友谅战于鄱阳湖，朱元璋凭湖口有利地形,锁控鄱阳湖，并以火焚烧陈舟,陈兵大败（见鄱阳湖之战）。清咸丰四年(1854)，湘军统帅曾国藩率湘军从武昌进抵九江，欲沿江东下威逼天京（今江苏南京）。石达开率太平军迎击，到湖口后，诱使湘军进入鄱阳湖，尔后，凭借湖口之险，切断江湖水道,堵塞隘口,将曾国藩水师截为两段，湘军溃散，粉碎清军的水陆进攻，是为著名的太平军湖口大捷。上、下钟山之间的双钟镇，今为湖口县人民政府驻地。
