软着陆  通过减速使航天器在接触地球或其他星球表面瞬时的垂直速度降低到最小值(理想情况为零),从而实现安全着陆的技术。软着陆的目的是保证航天员的安全和航天器上的仪器设备完好无损。为实现软着陆,必须先使航天器减速。航天器进入有大气的星球,可利用大气阻力减速。对于弹道式航天器,降落伞是最有效的气动力减速装置,辅以着陆缓冲火箭或缓冲结构即能实现软着陆。有翼航天器在稠密大气层里可利用升力控制轨道,逐步减速,最后像飞机一样水平着陆。人们在实现了地球软着陆(见航天器回收系统)之后,又实现了在金星和火星上软着陆(见金星着陆、火星着陆)。航天器在无大气的星球上的软着陆,须应用制动火箭作为减速的动力并辅以着陆缓冲结构(见月球着陆)。反之,航天器未经专门减速装置的减速,而以较大速度直接冲撞着陆的方式称作硬着陆。由于着陆速度过大,航天器将完全或大部损坏。因此航天器硬着陆就是毁坏性的着陆,与一般航空器的"着陆"概念不同。苏联的"月球" 2号、5号、7号、8号探测器曾在月球上硬着陆;"金星"3号探测器曾在金星上硬着陆。
