返混 又称逆向混合。广义地说，泛指不同时间进入系统的物料之间的混合，包括物料逆流动方向的流动，例如：环流和由湍流和分子扩散所造成的轴向混合，及由不均匀的速度分布所造成的短路、停滞区或“死区”、沟流等使物料在系统中的停留时间有差异的所有因素。 返混的结果是物料呈一定的停留时间分布。狭义地说，返混专指物料逆流动方向的流动和混合。返混影响系统中的温度分布和浓度分布，也影响反应过程和其他过程的结果。在化学反应工程的初创时期，曾把返混作为一种重要的反应器传递过程而进行广泛研究。其后，返混的概念亦被用于传热过程和精馏、吸收、萃取等传质分离过程的分析和研究。 返混是流动系统的内在流动特征，一般不易直接测定。返混的研究通常是先简化，然后假设流动模式（流动宏观形态的简化物理模式），以流动模型表示返混与物料停留时间分布的定量关系，并根据物料的停留时间分布来检验模型和估计模型参数。但是，返混与停留时间分布之间并不存在一一对应的关系。一定的返混流动模式会表现出确定的停留时间分布，但同样的停留时间分布却可能由不同的返混流动模式造成。所以从停留时间分布不能确切推测流动模式。 反应器中的流动，通常很复杂，常可简化为若干种基本的流动模式。其中理想流动模式有二：一是返混量为零的流动，即平推流（或活塞流，或理想排挤）；另一是返混量为无穷大的流动，即全混流（或理想混合）。非理想流动模式的返混量介于零与无穷大之间。 返混使系统中的温度分布或浓度分布趋于平坦。因此，凡是要求较大温度差或浓度差的场合，返混是不利因素。对各种反应来说，返混的利弊各不相同：①在正级数反应中，返混会降低反应器中反应物的浓度，必然会降低表观的反应速率。例如对于一级反应，在要求出口转化率为90％时，平推流反应器中的表观速率约为全混流反应器的2.3倍。②在有串联副反应的反应中,返混降低反应物的浓度、同时提高产物浓度，必然降低表观的选择率。③在有平行副反应的反应中，如果主反应级数高于副反应的级数，则返混使表观选择率下降。④对负级数反应、自催化反应以及其他需要均匀温度或浓度的反应（如可以利用反应放热来加热反应原料的反应），返混是有利因素。
