陆良大觉寺千佛塔造型而言，陆良大觉寺干佛塔在云南佛塔中别无二例，其样式在全国佛塔中也较为罕见，这正是它特别吸引人的地方。大觉寺干佛塔在陆良县城南真理街大觉寺内，因夺得名。此塔已有六七百年历史了。《陆良县志》载:"寺始建于元，重修于明万历……寺前面则建鼓钟，东偏则塔凌霄汉。"(程光祖《重修大觉寺小引》)。现除塔之外大觉寺建筑还有正殿、鼓楼等。塔立于正殿之左。此塔为六角形7级砖石结构，高17.79米，塔基为方形石砌台座，四面辟有佛凳各一，靠内原有佛像，今己佚失。基座上建六角形塔身，由下至上逐层收分，每层6面，每面用砖块砌成大小相等的小方佛拿，层层堆积，面面相依，远看恍如一巨大的塔形蜂巢。佛拿内各镶有一块释迦牟尼印像砖，砖上佛祖身披袈装，双手垂膝，盘足跌坐莲台之上，面目慈祥，正参禅入定，头部漾出一道"佛光"，可谓宝相庄严。塔7层，每层又有若干层佛龛，共计1613龛佛，是名副其实的"千佛塔"。塔顶之南向位置，有铜质迦楼罗(金鸡)振羽距足，雄姿勃发，当地人因此又称"金鸡塔"。除《陆良县志》所载明万历之外，大觉寺历代均作过修复，最近的一次是1982年省人民政府拨专款维修的。为保存文物风貌，此次首先参照残存佛凳内的佛像砖，重新烧制补齐，使各矣均有佛像砖，其次将塔顶已残的迦楼罗换上新的，并将塔身刷成金黄色，远远望去，金光滔滔，照眼耀明，倍增华彩。
