自然力是否在某些行业中比在另一些行业中更有助于提高劳动效率？某些作家提出了这样的问题，自然力对劳动的帮助，是否会因行业的不同而有差别；并说在某些行业中劳动起的作用最大，而在另一些行业中自然力起的作用最大。然而，在这方面，看来存在着严重的思想混乱。自然力在人类任何工作中所起的作用都是无限的，无法计量的。不可认为自然力在某一事物中比在另一事物中起的作用要大。甚至也不能说劳动起的作用要小些。可能需要较少的劳动，但是如果所需要的劳动是绝对不可少的，则所得到的结果既是自然力的产物，也是劳动的产物。当两个条件对于产生结果同样必不可少时，说结果多少是由一种条件产生的，多少是由另一种条件产生的，是毫无意义的；这就如同试图确定剪刀的哪一半在剪切动作中起的作用最大，或者说因子5和6中哪一个对乘积30的贡献最大。这种想法的通常表现是，认为自然力给予人类农业活动的帮助多于给予制造业活动的帮助。这一看法为法兰西经济学派所持有，亚当%26#183;斯密也未免受其影响，乃是起源于对地租性质的误解。由于地租是支付给自然要素的价格，由于在制造业活动中无需支付这种价格，这些著述家便认为，既然支付了价格，就是因为自然要素提供了较多的服务需要给予报酬。然而，好好思考一下这个问题，就会看出，之所以要为使用土地付出代价，只是因为土地的数量是有限的，若空气、热力、电力、化学力及制造业所使用的其他自然力都供应量很少，并可以象土地那样被垄断和占有，则使用它们也得支付租金。
