异龙湖出石屏县城东门约1公里便是碧波浩渺的异龙湖。异龙湖周长150华里,水面面积39平方公里,平均水深2米,最深处约7米蓄水约1亿立方米。异龙湖为云南五大湖之一,排名第四,小于滇池、洱海、抚仙湖,大于杞麓湖。吐口在东,称湖口河,位于新街。河上筑有拦水阁,楼台玲珑别致。琉璃瓦闪闪发光。湖口河向东流经建水,会旷野河而为泸江,汇南盘江流入珠江。异龙湖湖水清澈如镜,中有三岛:小岛称孟继龙,也称马坂垅;中岛称小末束,也称小水城;大岛称和龙,也称大水城。南岸共有72个港湾,较大者有九曲,为五爪山伸入湖中形成,故有三岛九曲之胜。唐朝时,乌麽蛮始居大岛上,筑城名末束城,是为石屏筑城之始。宋时中岛上亦筑城。此二城四周环水,故以其岛大小,名大水城、小水城。小岛马坂垅上蛇虫甚多,人不可居。唐宋时,酋长每窜罪犯于上。彝语"水城",叫"异椤"。明初汉人到石屏,不解彝语,误以为"异椤"是湖的名称,于是把湖名叫作"异龙湖"。异龙湖及湖畔,风景名胜极多。岛上遍植花木,环境清幽,,湖四周良田绵延,荷池飘香。大水城上的海潮寺,小水城上的后乐亭以及来鹤亭、白浪水月寺、龙港广胤寺、五爪山罗色庙,湖北边的乾阳山等都是佳景,其中以来鹤亭为最。一年四季,异龙湖上游人不绝,全凭小船飞渡。这里有"第二西湖"之称,为滇南的游览胜地之一。借一叶扁舟,湖山一览,心旷神怡,清风拂面,水波不兴。远看青山为屏,湖光山色,相得益彰。看不尽湖面轻舟,水上白帆,更添得阵阵渔歌,一抹彩霞,村落隐现,景色绝佳。湖中盛产鲦鱼、花鱼、青鱼,特别是餐鲦鱼,鱼肉细腻,味道鲜美,为鱼中珍品。
