亚历山大图书馆  世界上古代最著名的图书馆。公元前 3世纪中期由埃及托勒密王朝托勒密二世在亚历山大城建成亚历山大博物馆,内有亚历山大图书馆。馆内主要收藏希腊文著作。它设有数学 、医学 、天文学、文学 4个部,由国家聘任著名学者在馆内既从事学术研究,又担任图书管理员,所以成为当时世界上主要的文化与学术中心之一。历任的馆长或主持人均为当时著名学者,如埃拉托斯特尼(昔兰尼的)(一译厄拉多塞)、阿里斯托芬(拜占廷的)等。馆内还有人从事制作、修订和翻译图书的工作。如荷马的史诗《伊利亚特》(一译《伊利昂纪》)和《奥德赛》 (一译《奥德修纪》),就是先后由泽诺多托斯(以弗所的)、阿里斯托芬(拜占廷的)和阿里斯塔胡斯(萨莫色雷斯的)3人在馆内费时近百年最后修订为各24卷出版的。亚历山大图书馆在其存在的 600多年中,对古希腊和古罗马的学术发展,尤其对繁荣图书出版事业具有重要影响。公元 3世纪末,该馆毁于战火。
