购买力平价购买力平价purchasingpowerparity关于汇率决定的一种理论。最初由英国经济学家H.桑顿在1802年提出，其后成为D.李嘉图的古典经济理论的一个组成部分，最后由瑞典经济学家K.G.卡瑟尔(1866～1945）加以发展和充实，并在其1922年出版的《1914年以后的货币与外汇》一书中作了详细论述。这一理论的要点是：人们所以愿意买进外币，是由于这种货币在该国对商品和劳务拥有购买力。而本国货币则对本国的商品和劳务具有购买力。因此，两国货币的汇率取决于两种货币在这两国的购买力之比。当两种货币都发生通货膨胀时，名义汇率将等于原先的汇率乘以两国通货膨胀率之商。虽然可能出现背离这个新的名义汇率的情况，但汇率的变动趋势始终是两国货币购买力之比。因此，必须把用上述方式计算出来的汇率，看作是两种货币之间新的平价。这一平价即购买力平价。这一理论看到了纸币的购买力同纸币所代表的价值之间存在着一定联系，并进而认为通货膨胀的变化影响了汇率的变化。但其理论基础是货币数量论，忽视了物价和汇率之间可相互影响、互为因果的关系。
