该水库位于贵阳市南明河支流小车河上,属乌江水系,坝址以上控制面积为190 平方公里,距市中心8 千米。该水库1958年4月设计,同年8月动工修建,1960年6月第一期工程竣工。水库大坝为均质土坝,最大坝高37.5 米,坝顶长为133.0 米,坝顶高程为1114.50 米,校核洪水位为1113.5米,总库容为7200万立方米,设计洪水位1113.50 米,水库正常蓄水位为1110.00 米,相应库容为5420万立方米,防洪限制水位主汛期为1109.00 米,(相应库容为4950万立方米),后汛期为1110.00 米,(相应库容为5420万立方米)。水库设计标准为百年一遇设计,两千年一遇校核,万年一遇保坝。该水库是以城市供水和防洪为主的中型水库,汛期拦蓄南明河支流小车河上的来水,缓解城区的防洪压力,同时也是贵阳市城市供水的主要水源地之一。
