钾-氩法钾-氩法potassium-argonmethod根据40K经K层电子捕获形成稳定同位素40Ar的衰变规律建立的地质计时方法,K具分支衰变,其总量的89.33%为β衰变形成稳定的40Ca,而10.67%以电子俘获并放出γ光子而形成稳定同位素40Ar。根据放射性衰变定律,得出钾-氩法年龄计算公式:其中,λ是40K的总衰变常数,λλe+λβ,λe和λβ分别是40K衰变成40Ar和40Ca的衰变常数。按该公式计算年龄时,需满足下列条件:①岩石或矿物形成后保持封闭体系,既没有钾的交换,也无40Ar的得失。②样品中不存在过剩氩,外来氩全部作为大气氩扣除。③能精确测定40K的衰变常数和样品中的微量氩。由于40K仅占总钾量的万分之一左右,加之,只约10%的40K衰变成40Ar,所以自然样品中由40K衰变形成的40Ar量极少,年轻样品中的40Ar就更少了。故如何准确测定微量氩,是该法实验技术的关键。钾-氩法中还包括40Ar/39Ar计时法。该计时法是把样品放入核反应堆中经中子照射后,测定它们的40Ar/39Ar比值,以计算样品的地质年龄。适用于钾氩法测定的样品:矿物有云母、钾长石、角闪石、海绿石和伊利石等;岩石主要有玄武岩、细粒中基性岩和板岩等。
