轮距车轮在车辆支承平面(一般就是地面)上留下的轨迹的中心线之间的距离。如果车轴的两端是双车轮时,轮距是双车轮两个中心平面之间的距离。汽车的轮距有前轮距和后轮距之分,前轮距是前面两个轮中心平面之间的距离,后轮距是后面两个轮中心平面之间的距离,两者可以相同,也可以有所差别. 一般来说,轮距越宽,驾驶舒适性越高,但是有些国产轿车没有方向助力的,如果前轮距过宽其方向盘就会很“重”,影响驾驶的舒适性。此外,轮距还对汽车的总宽、总重、横向稳定性和安全性有影响。一般说来,轮距越大,对操纵平稳性越有利,同时对车身造型和车厢的宽敞程度也有利,横向稳定性越好。但轮距宽了,汽车的总宽和总重一般也加大,而且容易产生向车身侧面甩泥的问题。如果轮距过宽还会影响汽车的安全性,因此,轮距应与车身宽度相适应。
