光学跟踪经纬仪 记录人造卫星瞬时位置的光学仪器。它是装在地平式装置上的双筒折射望远镜。当物镜口径为15厘米时，它可观测到7～8等的人造卫星。仪器的高度和方位转动可在较宽的范围内实现连续调节，能对各种运行轨道和速度的人造卫星进行观测。观测精度同卫星轨道、运行速度、观测者的熟练程度和仪器静态精度有关，一般在3'以内。观测时两名观测者位于仪器相对两侧，通过各自的望远镜并控制相应的仪器转动速度，对目标进行搜索和瞄准，使仪器尽可能准确地跟踪目标，然后闭合记录开关，即可输出目标方位和高度角数值。输出角度的形式有两种。一种是通过金属度盘在记录纸带上直接打印出来，同时输出取点瞬间的记时讯号给记时仪。另一种是采用光学编码度盘作为测角元件，在跟踪过程中根据所需要的采样频率，自动以二进码形式输出目标方位和高度值，经数据传输设备直接输入电子计算机进行处理。采用两台或两台以上同类仪器进行交会测量，可获得目标在空间的运动轨迹。打印形式的光学跟踪经纬仪，配套设备简单，独立性强，但它在数据处理和归算上要耗费许多时间和人力。码盘输出形式的跟踪经纬仪，配套设备复杂，但可立即获得目标的轨道数据，故在人造卫星观测站，尤其是在火箭发射场得到广泛应用。此外，还有配备红外线跟踪器、电视监视器、激光测距仪等附属装置的全自动光学跟踪经纬仪，测角精度可高于1′。
