吉登斯吉登斯（1938～）Giddens，Anthony英国社会学家。曾执教于多所欧美大学，后任英国剑桥大学皇家学院研究员。吉登斯曾对社会学史上各种流派作过系统的批判性考察，认为当代社会学的理论应当继承和发扬米尔斯所说的社会学的想象力，并在3个维度内将其扩展和延伸，即社会学的理论是历史的、人类学的和批判的。社会学只有对不同社会形态的历史进行比较研究，对现存的社会模式进行批判，才能全面地理解和认识人类社会自身。在方法论上，他深受A.舒茨的影响，排斥自然主义和实证主义，认为社会学认识社会时，遵循着“双面诠释”的规则，即社会学是在已构造了的意义框架上运用独特的理论概念和术语进行再认识和再解释。社会学所探求的社会结构，只有经过结构化的过程方能得以说明，试图超越和克服社会学的基本缺陷，但其自身就难以做到。著有《资本主义和当代社会理论》、《社会学方法的新规则》、《社会理论的主要问题》、《历史唯物主义的当代批评》、《社会理论的轮廓及其批评》、《社会构造：结构化理论纲要》和《社会学：简要但批评的导论》等。
