短额负蝗(小尖头蚱蜢)分布于东北、华北、西北、华中、华南、西南以及台湾。雌成虫体长31-33毫米,前翅长27-29毫米。体淡绿或褐色(冬型成虫),有淡黄色瘤突。头尖,颜面斜度大,与头形成锐角;颜面中间有纵沟;触角剑形,雌性者短于雄性。前翅超过后足腿节端部的长度;后翅略短于前翅,基部呈玫瑰色。年发生1代(华北)或2代(华东),以产于土中的卵块过冬。卵呈倾斜状排列并有3-5行,且为胶质丝绕裹着。若虫期共脱皮4次,5龄。随着龄期的增长,后胸上的翅芽也不断加长。初孵若虫常多只集结于叶背表面,啃食叶肉;3龄后则分散生活,被害叶片呈缺刻状。主要危害禾本科植物以及豆类、棉花和蔬菜。
