榆科榆科Ulmaceae双子叶植物纲金缕梅亚纲的一科。乔木或灌木。单叶互生,稀对生,常二列,羽状脉或基部3出脉,稀基部5出脉或掌状3出脉,有柄;托叶常呈膜质,侧生或柄内生,早落。单被花两性、单性或杂性,雌雄异株或同株,少数或多数排成聚伞花序,或因序轴短缩而呈簇生状,或单生,生叶腋或近新枝下部或近基部的苞腋;花被裂片4~8,雄蕊常与花被裂片同数而对生,雌蕊由2心皮连合而成,子房上位,通常1室,具1枚倒生胚珠。果为核果或小坚果,有时小坚果具翅。约16属230余种,主要产于北半球,分布于热带至寒温带。其中种较多的为朴属、山黄麻属、榆属和白颜树属;有4个单种属,即青檀、刺榆、水榆及Mirandaceltismonoica。中国有8属约50种,分布几遍全国,其中榆属占将近一半,青檀属为特有属。榆树榆科植物的化石仅发现落叶型,多数叶子边缘具齿,主要在北半球温带、暖温带和亚热带。最早在晚白垩世,在欧亚大陆和北美的第三纪地层中广泛地找到过榆树、朴树、榉树、刺榆、青檀、糙叶树及Ulminium等属植物的花粉化石、叶及内果皮。在中国发现榆科化石的地区为东北、华北、山东、陕西、新疆等省区。前人以形态性状为依据,将榆科分为两个族或两个亚科,近来得到了植物化学家的支持,但对某些属的归宿却有不同的意见,如J.哈钦森根据花、果、胚、子叶等性状,分榆科为榆族和朴族两族。榆科多数种类的木材坚硬、细致,耐磨损,韧性强,材质优良,可供家具、器具、建筑、车辆、桥梁、造船、农具等用;枝皮、树皮纤维强韧,可代麻制绳、织袋,或作造纸及人造棉原料。有些属(如白颜树属、朴属、糙叶树属、榆属等)的种子油可供工业用,榆属种子油还可供医药用及化工原料。某些生长较快、材质优良的乔木树种可作造林树种,尤其是榆属的某些种类(如白榆等)已在树种贫乏的温带地区广为种植。
