水玻璃 又称可溶性玻璃。为易溶于水的硅酸钠，最简单的化学式为Na2SiO3,实际组成较复杂，是各种硅酸钠的混合物,其化学式应为mNa2O·nSiO2。纯的Na2SiO3为无色正交晶体, 熔点1088℃。它的五水合物Na2SiO3·5H2O为白色三斜晶体,熔点72.2℃,密度1.749克/厘米3；100℃时失水。水玻璃的水溶液又称泡花碱，呈强碱性，在溶液中存在以下一些平衡： 纯的Na2SiO3可由纯石英砂与烧碱或纯碱共熔制得： 水玻璃的工业制法是将石英砂、纯碱和煤粉混合后放在温度为1100～1350℃的反射炉内进行熔烧。反应完毕后，将产物冷却，即得玻璃状灰色或绿色块状物，用水蒸气处理得到粘稠液体，就是商品水玻璃。 水玻璃能加固土壤。浸过水玻璃的三合土耐摩擦，浸过水玻璃的木材或织物不易着火。水玻璃和白垩或水泥调成的耐火泥可粘合瓷器、玻璃或砌壁炉。在水玻璃稀溶液中浸过的鸡蛋可在常温下长久保存不坏。泡花碱可做碱性发泡剂。
