扁桃体 口咽部上皮下的淋巴组织团块。在舌根、咽部周围的上皮下有好几群淋巴组织，按其位置分别称为腭扁桃体、咽扁桃体和舌扁桃体。其中以腭扁桃体最大，通常所说的扁桃体即指腭扁桃体而言。腭扁桃体有一对，位于舌腭弓与咽腭弓之间，卵圆形，表面为复层鳞状上皮所覆盖。上皮向扁桃体内部陷入形成10～20个隐窝，隐窝中含有脱落的上皮细胞。淋巴细胞及细菌等。上皮下方及隐窝周围密集分布着淋巴小结及弥散淋巴组织，淋巴细胞常穿过上皮而沉积于口咽部。扁桃体的被膜是一层致密的结缔组织，它把腭扁桃体与邻近器官隔开，有阻止腭扁桃体感染扩散的屏障作用。 扁桃体可产生淋巴细胞和抗体，故具有抗细菌抗病毒的防御功能。咽部是饮食和呼吸气的必经之路，经常接触较易隐藏病菌和异物。咽部丰富的淋巴组织和扁桃体执行着机体这一特殊区域的防御保护任务。不过此处也易遭受溶血性链球菌。葡萄球菌和肺炎球菌等到病菌和侵袭而发炎。这些细菌通常就存在于人的咽部和扁桃体隐窝内。正常情况下，由于扁桃体表面上皮完整和粘液腺不断分泌，可将细菌随同脱落的上皮细胞从隐窝口排出，因此保持着机体的健康。当机体因过度疲劳、受凉等原因而使抵抗力下降，上皮防御机能减弱，腺体分泌机能降低时，扁桃体就会遭受细菌感染而发炎。若扁桃体炎反复发作并对全身产生不利影响时，可以考虑将扁桃体用手术摘除。
