佛统大金塔位于曼谷以西80公里处的佛统府，是泰国的一处佛教圣地。小城中遍布着佛寺佛塔，特别是一座世界著名的大金塔，吸引着泰国各地和世界各国的佛教徒和旅游者。"佛统"一词来自巴利文，意为"第一座城市"；大金塔，泰语称"帕巴统者里"，意为"第一佛塔"。没有人记得大金塔建于何时，但它来源于一段神奇的传说：很早以前，统治佛统的君王生了一个儿子，很受父亲宠爱，但算命先生说，儿子长大会杀死父亲。君王要饿死儿子。一个好心妇女收养了这个孩子。孩子长大后率众起义，杀死了君王。当得知君王是他亲生父亲后，十分悔恨，又处死了收养他的妇女。之后，他悔恨莫及。僧人告诉他，要赎罪，只有"建一座鸽子飞不到顶的大塔"。以后，这里就出现了泰国最古老的最高的大金塔。大金塔建于佛统市中心，呈褐黄色，塔高130米，光是螺旋状的塔尖部分就高40米，圆形塔底直径57米。塔的底座是两层巨大的平台。在大佛塔下面还罩着三座小佛塔。小佛塔修建于公元6世纪，高84米，废弃。1860年，泰王拉玛四世下令加以修葺，并在其上修建大塔，后塔被雷电击毁，又新建大塔。所以，是大塔之内，包容着三个佛塔，一个套一个，这在佛塔建筑史上是仅见的。在大塔基座第二层平台上，有4座佛殿背靠着大塔。在4座佛殿之间，24座钟亭环绕大塔而立。在大金塔寺院里，还有一座博物馆，陈列着许多文物，证明佛统是佛教最早的传入泰国的地方。
