十字花科十字花科Cruciferae双子叶植物纲五桠果亚纲的一科。一年、二年或多年生草本,很少呈亚灌木状。基生叶莲座状,茎生叶互生,无托叶,单叶或羽状分裂。花两性,整齐;萼片4,分离,排成2轮;花瓣4,分离,有白、黄、粉红、淡紫、紫各色,排列呈十字形,上部开展,下部呈爪,稀缺乏;雄蕊通常6,4长2短,称四强雄蕊,少数更多或更少,在花丝基部常具蜜腺;雌蕊1,子房上位,由2心皮组成,常有假隔膜分成2室,少数无假隔膜,则为1室,每室有胚珠1至多数,生于侧膜胚座上,排列成1或2行。果实为长角果或短角果,成熟时由下向上开裂或不裂,少数角果顶端具或长或短的喙。十字花科约375属3200种,广布全球,主要分布北温带,地中海区域较多。中国产95属425种,124变种和9变型,中国各地均有分布,以西南、西北、东北山区和丘陵地带为多,平原和沿海地区较少。其中半脊荠属、蛇头荠属、宽框荠属、穴丝芥属、堇叶芥属、连蕊芥属、阴山荠属为中国的特有属。菘蓝该科主产蔬菜和油料作物,如芸薹属、萝卜属等;药用植物如菘蓝属、蔊菜属、糖芥属等;观赏植物如桂竹香属、紫罗兰属、诸葛菜属等;其他有经济用途的属还有荠属、独行菜属、菥蓂属(遏蓝菜属)等;该科植物中也有很多是蜜源植物。
