城镇集聚区 若干城镇集聚成片发展的地区，又称城镇群。 一个城镇集聚区内，有若干城镇和农村居民点，它们大小不一，性质各异，但在社会、经济、文化、生活各方面有密切联系。城镇集聚区内相当数量居民的工作地点和居住地点不在同一城镇，因此城镇之间有频繁的交通往来。 城镇集聚区的形成和组合主要有两种类型：一种是以某个大城市为核心，逐步向外扩展，在其周围形成若干中小城镇，如伦敦、纽约、巴黎、莫斯科、上海及其周围城镇；另一种是由若干座规模大致相仿的城市组成的多核心城镇集聚区，如荷兰的兰斯塔德（意即"环状城市"，包括政府机构集中地的海牙，港口和重工业中心鹿特丹,旅游和文化事业中心阿姆斯特丹,以及若干较小城镇），联邦德国的莱茵－鲁尔（由杜塞尔多夫、埃森、杜伊斯堡、伍佩尔塔尔、多特蒙德以及波恩和科隆等城市组成），苏联的顿巴斯（由顿涅茨克、哥尔洛夫卡、卢甘斯克等城市组成）等。 工业或人口在一定地域范围内高度集中的城镇集聚区可以产生较好的生产协作条件，有利于城镇之间多种职能的相互补充，减轻集中型大城市的过重负担，促进较小城镇和农村地区经济、技术、文化和生活水平的提高。但如果城镇集聚区全然自发地、无规划地发展而造成工业生产和人口过分集中，也可能出现某种程度的发展混乱和生态恶化的现象。此外，城镇集聚区还有一些缺点：居住在此一城镇而在另一城镇就业的人上下班要花很多时间；各城镇之间往往缺乏统一的行政管理；须增加道路等基础设施建设费用等。
