斯宾塞斯宾塞（1820～1903）Spencer，Herbert英国社会学家，哲学家。社会进化论和社会有机体论的代表人物。1820年4月27日出生于英国德比郡的教师家庭，1903年12月8日卒于苏塞克斯郡。幼时体弱辍学，由父亲施教，未受正规学校教育。1837～1848年担任铁路工程师。1848年任伦敦《经济学家》杂志助理编辑。1850年发表第一部著作《社会静力学》。1852年发表论文《进化的假说》，首次提出社会进化论思想。1853年他的教父去世给斯宾塞留下大笔遗产，从此潜心著书立说。斯宾塞的社会学理论的突出特点是将社会与生物有机体进行类比，他的社会进化论和社会有机体论都是从这种类比出发和展开的。他在C.R.达尔文《物种起源》（1859）发表前7年就提出了社会进化思想，认为进化是一个普遍规律，但仍受达尔文生物进化论的影响，并将生存竞争、自然选择的原则移植到社会理论中。认为社会的进化过程同生物进化过程一样，也是优胜劣败，适者生存。进而认为进化是一种自然过程，应遵循其自身的规律，而不应人为地干涉，反对社会福利和国家计划，也反对社会改良和社会革命。斯宾塞的社会有机体论集中反映在他的《社会学原理》第一卷中，他将社会与生物有机体进行了6项类比，得出了3个结论：①社会是一个体系，一个由相互联系的各个部分构成的紧密整体。②这个体系只能从其结构运转的意义上去理解。③体系要存在下去，它的需求就必须得到满足。这些观点开启了结构功能理论的先河。斯宾塞的思想对社会学、人类学、哲学的发展都产生了深远的影响。著有《心理学原理》、《第一原理》、《生物学原理》、《社会学研究》、《社会学原理》、《伦理学原理》。
