跨文化研究 通过比较世界上各种不同文化样本来验证人类心理和行为特征的心理学研究方法。例如，以语言、风俗习惯、社会制度、育儿方式等均不相同的民族为样本，搜集资料，进行文化间的比较，研究他们之间在心理和行为上的相同点和不同点。近年来，心理学中跨文化研究迅速发展，已经形成一个新的心理学分支，称跨文化心理学。 先驱性的跨文化研究可追溯至英国人类学家E.B.泰勒1889年发表的《制度发展的调查方法》的报告。20世纪初，跨文化研究被从事原始社会研究的人类学家和心理学家所广泛采用。代表性的研究如英国心理学家W.H.R.里弗斯对印度和南太平洋居民的感觉和知觉所作的定量分析，美国社会学家W.G.萨姆纳对个人或团体满足需要的功能起源于风俗习惯的研究。30～50年代,美国耶鲁大学人类关系研究所对跨文化研究作出了巨大贡献。该所设有跨文化调查的专门机构，从事民族志资料的广泛搜集和分类，并于1949年建立了档案库──《人类关系区域档案》。这一时期，跨文化研究的代表著作有G.P.默多克的《社会结构》(1949)，这是第一部用跨文化研究方法写成的专著。当时从事文化与人格相关的跨文化研究的学者，还有B.马利诺夫斯基、M.米德、E.萨皮尔、R.林顿、C.克拉克洪等。60～70年代，跨文化研究进一步发展，主要表现为两个方面：①将电子计算机用于跨文化研究,因而能处理大量的数和复杂的统计分析,C.E.奥斯古德等人的《感情意义的跨文化普遍性》(1975)一书就是一个代表；②跨文化研究方法水平的提高，这可以R.布里斯林等人的《跨文化研究方法》(1973)为代表。70年代以后，有不少文化分类研究，例如区分为人外部存在的客观文化(包括人造物、制度、外显行为类型等)和人内部产生的主观文化(包括认知、态度和价值观等)，并根据这种划分进行跨文化研究。跨文化研究的最终目的是对与文化相关联的心理和行为特征作假设检验，以揭示与各种文化相关联的人类心理和行为特征的作用。
