蜡蚧蜡蚧Coccidae;softscales蚧总科蜡蚧科的通称。全世界已知约778种。中国已知约75种,其中22种是农、林、果树和观赏植物的常见害虫。该科包括中国著名的特有种白蜡蚧(白蜡虫),所产白蜡是工业、医药和日常生活用品的重要原料之一,在经济上占有重要地位。蜡蚧雌成虫体形变化很多,大小不一,有的呈球形,半球形,扁草帽形;有的虫体外被覆很厚的蜡质层。体外有蜡质覆盖物的,其外貌多呈粉状、玻璃状,或白色、棕褐色壳状;也有的虫体背面体壁不同程度地硬化和向上隆起,腹面膜质。头、胸、腹合并,体节几乎完全消失;有的种类在体缘稍见分节痕迹。有时在腹面中部,特别是腹部中部,可见不很明显的体节褶纹。触角6~9节或退化。眼小或缺。腹部末端有长短不等的裂口,称为臀裂。臀裂的存在是该科重要分类识别特征之一。雄成虫有翅,平衡棒有各种类型。触角10节。单眼4~12个。足长而发达,有正常节数。交配器短。在腹部倒数第2节上具有2个蜡腺孔,分泌出2根长的白色蜡丝。雄幼虫常在蜡质介壳下完成其发育。雄茧常为长椭圆形的毛玻璃状蜡壳,其壳面具蜡块或各种蜡角。蜡蚧科中有些种类产卵期分泌粉状或棉状蜡质分泌物形成卵囊,但另外一些种类不分泌卵囊,卵产在腹面向背收缩后形成的空腔内。蚧科的重要害虫有红蜡蚧、橘绿绵蜡蚧、日本蜡蚧、褐软蜡蚧、枣球蜡蚧等,为害多种果树及经济树木、花卉等。
