动物地理学动物地理学zoogeography研究动物在地球表面分布及其生态地理规律的学科。地理学和动物学的边缘学科。古代中国、古希腊、古罗马的著作对动物的分布都有所记载。18世纪～19世纪上半叶，C.von林奈《自然系统》问世，建立了动物分类学系统，科学的动物地理学开始出现。19世纪，C.R.达尔文的《物种起源》用进化论观点阐述动物的分布及成因。同时代的英国进化论者A.R.华莱士系统地探讨了动物在地球上的分布，对P.L.斯特莱克划分的世界陆栖动物分布区（界）进行了补充修正，并于1860年提出华莱士线，1876年出版《动物的地理分布》一书，进一步探讨了动物的扩展受历史因素和区域生态因素的制约，发展了历史动物地理学。20世纪初，R.黑塞等以生态学观点分析影响动物空间分布的各种因素，探讨动物群落结构与自然环境的相互关系，逐步形成了生态动物地理学。与此同时，海洋动物地理的研究也取得较大进展。这样，历史动物地理学和生态动物地理学，就构成综合性的动物地理学，并成其两大分支学科。前者着重研究动物分布区的形成及变迁，进行动物地理区的划分，借助古生物学、地质学和古地理学有关资料和大陆永恒说、陆桥说、大陆漂移说解释地球上动物分布的复杂现象；后者着重研究动物分布、扩展的生态因素，进行动物生态地理群的划分，揭示不同地理区域动物资源的特点。动物地理的研究为保护和利用动物资源提供了科学依据。
