热辐射和非热辐射 如果辐射源（等离子体、中性气体云等）处于热动平衡或局部热动平衡状态，即系统内质点（分子、原子、离子、电子等）的能量分布可以用一定温度下的玻耳兹曼分布律表示，则其辐射称为热辐射；反之，如果辐射源中质点远离热动平衡分布，则其辐射称为非热辐射。近年发现的许多新型天体，如类星体、中子星、星际分子射电源、X射线源、γ射线源等,它们的辐射谱形、偏振状态、光变特性等与热辐射有明显区别，因此，非热辐射机制的研究日益受到重视。例如，类星体和射电星系所以能发射有偏振特性的幂律型射电谱，普遍认为是由远离热动平衡分布的相对论性电子在外磁场中的同步加速辐射所造成的。又如强的分子射电谱线，一般认为是来自天体微波激射源放大作用。实现这种辐射机制的条件是"粒子数反转"，要求分子的能级分布远离平衡分布，即处于高能级上的分子数多于低能级上的分子数。对于太阳的Ⅱ型及Ⅲ型射电爆发(见太阳射电爆发)，可用相对论性电子在等离子体中穿行时的切连科夫辐射说明。由这一效应产生的等离子体波，将会部分转化为射电辐射。至于相对论性电子的逆康普顿散射，则是产生γ射线的一种重要的非热辐射机制。
