类星体类星体quasar一类在底片上具有类似恒星的像,其光谱有巨大红移的天体。类星体是20世纪60年代重大天文发现之一。1960年和1962年分别发现射电源3C48和3C273的光学对应体如恒星状,1963年证认出它们光谱中的发射线是具有巨大红移的某些元素的谱线。这类射电源还具有很强的紫外辐射,它们被称为类星射电源。后来,用光学方法又发现了一类外观很像恒星,紫外辐射也很强,但射电辐射却探测不到的天体,它们被称为射电宁静类星体。类星射电源和射电宁静类星体统称类星体。在截至1992年已发现的6000多个类星体中,大部分属于射电宁静类星体。类星体的巨大红移常被认为是宇宙学红移,即是宇宙膨胀引起的河外天体退行的结果。由此可推算出绝大多数类星体的距离超过百亿光年。有人认为,类星体很可能是极为遥远的、具有十分激烈活动星系核的活动星系,它在单位时间内发出的辐射能要比一般星系大好几个数量级,但其产能机制还不知道。也有一些人认为类星体的巨大红移并不是宇宙学红移,它们并不是遥远的天体,它们在单位时间内发出的辐射能并非大得惊人,从而避免了类星体的能源机制之谜。但所提出的各种非宇宙学红移的理论解释,没有一种是令人信服的。
