镍矿镍属于亲铁元素,在地球中的含量仅次于硅、氧、铁、镁,居第5位。在地核中含镍最高,是天然的镍铁合金。在地壳中铁镁质岩石含镍高于硅铝质岩石,例如橄榄岩含镍为花岗岩的1000倍,辉长岩含镍为花岗岩的80倍。已知含镍矿物约50余种。其中硫化物,如镍黄铁矿、紫硫镍铁矿等游离硫化镍形态存在,有相当一部分镍以类质同象赋存于磁黄铁矿中。而氧化镍矿中,镍红土矿含铁高,含硅镁低,含镍为1~2;硅酸镍所含铁低,含硅镁高,含镍为1.6~4.0。目前,氧化镍矿的开发利用是以镍红土矿为主,它是由超基性岩风化发展而成的,镍主要以镍褐铁矿(很少结晶到不结晶的氧化铁)形式存在。Ni2 具强烈亲硫性。在岩浆结晶早期,在镍含量一定的前提下,镍在岩石中的富集程度取决于硫的逸度。当有足够的硫时,镍与硫及似硫物(砷、锑)形成含镍硫化物,在硅酸矿物结晶前分离出来,形成镍的硫(或砷)化物(如针镍矿、磁黄铁矿、镍黄铁矿、红砷镍矿、砷镍矿、镍华)。通常所谓的镁硅镍矿(即硅酸镍矿)是从蛇纹石到类似粘土的水蛇纹石与皂石等镁矿物的一系列混合物的总称,在氧化作用条件下,部分镁被镍置换。氧化镍和硫化镍一样,现在已成为镍的重要来源。硫化镍矿床的矿石按硫化率,即呈硫化物状态的镍(SNi)与全镍(TNi)之比将矿石分为:原生矿石:SNi/TNi>70混合矿石:SNi/TNi45~70氧化矿石:SNi/TNi<45硅酸镍矿石按氧化镁含量分为:铁质矿石:MgO<10铁镁质矿石:MgO10~20镁质矿石:MgO>20镍矿石的主要有害杂质有铜(在硅酸镍矿中)、铅、锌、砷、氟、锰、锑、铋、铬等。硫化镍矿石按镍含量可分下列三个品级,特富矿石:Ni>3;富矿石Ni1~3;贫矿石:Ni0.3~1。富矿石及贫矿石需经选矿,特富矿石可直接入炉冶炼。硫化镍矿床普遍含铜,常称含铜硫化镍矿床。在镍矿体中铜无需单独制定指标和圈定矿体,当镍品位达不到指标而铜可单独形成矿体时,其指标为按铜执行。除铜外,一般常伴生有铁、铬、钴、锰、铂族金属、金、银及硒和碲等,这些伴生有用组分的含量要求是:Pt、Pd为0.03g/t;Os、Ru、Rh、Ir为0.02g/t;Au为0.05~0.1g/t、Ag为1.0g/t、Co为0.01;Se为0.0005;Te为0.0002。在蛇纹岩、滑石等矿床中含有较高的镍,常有回收价值,在评价该类矿床时对镍要注意综合评价。
