岳阳市岳阳市简称岳。位于中国湖南省东北部，东倚幕阜山，西抱洞庭湖，北枕长江。人口443万(市、郊区人口42.43万)。西晋太康元年(280)于今市区置巴陵县。南朝宋元嘉十六年(439)置巴陵郡。梁改名巴州，又增设岳阳郡。隋废岳阳郡改巴州为岳州。南宋绍兴二十五年(1155)改为纯州，三十一年变名岳州。元至元十二年(1275)置岳州路。明洪武十四年（1381）升岳州府，1964年为岳阳专区驻地。1968年为岳阳地区驻地。1983年升为省辖市。是省内重要商品粮、鱼生产基地。盛产茶叶、银鱼、湘莲、蚌珠、蜂蜜。君山银针、北港毛尖为名茶。矿藏有矾、铅、锌、金、钨等。山林57.3万公顷，森林覆盖率为30％，有樟、梓等优质名材，还有油茶、油桐、柑橘等经济林和丰富的中草药。工业有化工、采矿、机械、纺织、建材、造纸等。有风景名胜点193处，革命纪念地22处，其中有岳阳楼、慈氏塔、鲁肃墓、岳州文庙、洞庭湖中的君山和扁山、城南的南湖公园为著名游览地。还有屈子祠、任弼时故居和彭德怀领导平江起义的旧址。岳阳市容
