南湖大山  台湾省中央山脉北部最高峰。海拔3740米,仅次于玉山、雪山(副峰除外)及中央山脉中段的秀姑峦山和马博拉斯山,居全省第5位。以南湖大山(主峰)为核山,周邻约3公里半径内,3500米以上高峰共有7座,皆以南湖为名,简称北山(3535米)、北峰(3580米)、东峰(3639米)、东南峰(3526米)、中南峰(3500米)、南山(3516米),为西注台湾海峡的大甲溪和东入太平洋的立雾溪分水岭。山汇诸峰皆以粘板岩为主。因高度、位置和地势适宜,曾是更新世冰川分布区,以主峰及其外围的北、东北、东3峰为主,遗迹保存甚多,冰蚀地形典型,有冰斗冰川及山谷冰川,前者尤多。中央凹地(亦称南湖谷地)的冰斗遗迹保存最好。南湖大山一带,冬春季节因受来自太平洋通过宜兰三角洲平原上空深入的东北风,并受大陆冷气团东南移影响,3000米以上地区常有短期积雪甚厚,由此亦可推知本区昔时冰川生成和冰蚀地形发育情况。据调查研究,在南湖主峰及其东北外围,共已发现冰斗地形不下12处,底高在3300米以上,尤以3500米左右为多。位于主峰东北坡的一处,径长达2500米,宽约1000米,其西壁中部高约1000米的陡崖,角度大致60°~70°。在此西邻,更有长达4000米,宽约1500米的一处。估计南湖大山冰斗群形成时,雪线高度大致相当3400~3500米。发源于南湖大山西侧的南湖溪及与其西邻源于雪山东北坡的七家湾溪等(均大甲溪上源),均以产一种可能为冰期残留的鲑鳟鱼类著名,这种陆封型鱼类即与冰川时期低温气候有密切联系。
