菜蛾科  鳞翅目的 1科。停歇时触角前伸,前翅后端常成鸡尾状,老熟幼虫结网状茧的小型蛾类。本科昆虫通称菜蛾。全世界已知约 200种。头部鳞片紧贴或有丛毛。单眼有或无。舌发达。触角是翅长的2/3~4/5,栖息时向前伸,根据这一特点,容易与麦蛾、巢蛾相区别。下唇须第 2节下面有向前伸的长毛束,使整节呈三角形,第3 节尖而光滑,向上举。前翅宽或窄,顶角常呈镰刀状或凸出,有翅痣和副室,后缘毛有时发达并向后伸,栖息时突出如鸡尾。臀脉基部有长分叉。后翅长卵圆形或披针形,缘毛长。雄性外生殖器的爪形突不发达,颚形突横带状,有时与尾突愈合,抱器瓣宽大,抱器腹明显或不明显。雌性外生殖器前表皮突有分支,后阴片多变化,导管端片明显,囊突有或无(见图)。    幼虫胸足、腹足俱全,趾钩排成单序环,臀足较长而往后斜伸,多在叶片上拉丝取食叶肉或潜叶、蛀食嫩梢,结网状茧化蛹其中。成虫有趋光性。最常见的种类小菜蛾是蔬菜的重要害虫,分布全世界。
