宣卷 清末民初广泛流行起来的民间说唱形式。全称为宣讲宝卷。原是一种宣讲经典的宗教活动,始于明代,流行于华北地区河北一带的秘密宗教如白莲教、红阳教及其支派中间,用以宣传教义;其他秘密宗教和佛教徒也曾用来作为号召群众的工具，当时称为"科仪"。宣卷时有"开经偈"、"焚香赞"、"收经偈"等仪式。清同治、光绪年间和民国初年，宣卷扩展到江南以上海、杭州、苏州、绍兴、宁波等城市为中心的广大地区，虽然仍作为布道之用，但已发展成为一种民间说唱艺术。宝卷就成为宣卷艺人的脚本，并有不少抄本和刊本流传。宣卷以演唱故事为主，多数脚本已是纯粹的说唱作品，少数还有宗教气息。不但一些庙宇、宗祠是宣卷的场所，庙会和群众娱乐场所，住宅以至街头、茶市、饭庄、旅店，也可以演唱宣卷。宣卷艺人称为先生。后来，宣卷还流行到江西、湖南、四川，一度还流行到河南、山西、河北。以江浙较为盛行。 宣卷时照例先由宣卷艺人焚香请佛，然后唱四句定场诗，如《家堂宝卷》："家堂宝卷初展开，诸佛菩萨降凡来。在堂大众高声念，消灾延寿福满来。"唱完以后开书。在宣讲正文时，有说有唱，说少唱多。唱腔音乐性不强，有时只用一支简单的调子，伴奏用打击乐器，或用鼓、板，或用渔鼓、简板，或用木鱼、钟磬，个别也有用胡琴的。由于艺人派系不同，唱腔和伴奏乐器也就有所不同。除宣讲正卷外，还有用于敬香、请灶、传香、收香、结缘等仪式的小卷。 宣卷艺人有的以超度亡灵一类的佛事为主要业务，不大讲故事；有的以宣讲故事为主，上海还有道士宣卷的。宣卷艺人各有师承，所以同一内容的宝卷虽然故事情节大致相同，但叙述方法和唱词却差异很大。宣卷艺人都具有一定表演水平，唱得字正腔圆，中节合度，颇有魅力。吴江一派的宣卷甚至起角色，分出生、旦、净、丑的语气和适当的表情，更能吸引听众。听宣卷的以妇女为主，尤以老年人居多。善男信女认为听宣卷不是为了娱乐,而是一种敬神礼佛的善功行为,所以宣卷就不能更好地发展成为说唱艺术。中华人民共和国成立后，在群众中进行破除迷信的教育，宣卷也就逐渐衰微而绝迹了。
