隐形军舰所谓隐形军舰，不是指肉眼见不到的军舰，而是指用现代化探测装置，如雷达、声纳、红外探测器等探测不到，或极难探测到的一种新型军舰。它出现于本世纪90年代的几个世界海军强国的舰队中，如美国的“海影”号、瑞典的“斯迈杰，，号、法国的“拉斐特”号军舰，都属于隐形军舰。隐形军舰的出现略迟于隐形飞机，它是将隐形飞机的隐身技术移植到军舰上的结果。隐形军舰的隐身技术与隐形飞机一样，但难度要大于飞机，因为军舰的速度慢、体积大。隐形军舰要做到隐形，最少需要做到雷达隐形与红外隐形。雷达隐形就是要让军舰不强烈反射电磁波或根本不反射电磁波，从而让雷达“致盲”，看不到军舰所在。另外，在舰体外表涂上一层能吸收电磁波的涂料也是隐形手段之一。这种涂料能够吸收雷达的电磁波，不让电磁波反射回去，或者将电磁波转化为热能消散到大气中去。通过以上两种隐形手段，军舰在雷达屏幕上变得模糊、缩小直至消失了，从而达到了雷达隐形。另外，军舰这种钢铁怪兽极容易被红外探测器探测到，因为军舰有很强的红外辐射，它的甲板吸收太阳光反射出大量的辐射热，它的烟囱、各类排气管和机器运转散发出的热量都很容易被红外探测器探测到。为了不被红外探测器探测到，就要考虑尽量少排放热量或以各种屏蔽措施予以屏蔽。现在隐形军舰上采用的“红外抑制装置”还不完善，还达不到红外隐形的目的。另外，军舰还要考虑声隐形，即不被声纳探测到，这点也是较难做到的。
