交通工程交通工程trafficengineering研究道路交通发生、构成和运动规律的理论及其应用的学科。又称交通工程学。它的研究对象是人、车、路及其与土地使用、房屋建筑等综合环境之间的相互关系。研究目的是探求使道路交通系统运输能力最大、经济效益最高、交通事故最少和公害程度最低的科学技术措施，从而指导道路系统的规划建设和交通系统的运行管理。交通工程创立于20世纪30年代。1930年美国成立交通工程师协会，初期主要探讨有关减少交通阻塞、保障交通安全和交通管理等问题。40年代注意到交通规划问题。50年代注意研究道路交通中人、车、路三者的相互关系，创立了交通流理论。60年代开始在交通工程中应用计算机控制信号灯、处理资料和制订规划，并注意研究交通公害问题。70年代在交通工程领域引入系统工程的知识。中国在70年代开始开展交通工程的研究。交通工程研究的内容主要包括：①交通特性。包括车辆特性；驾驶员和行人的交通特性，主要指他们的心理因素、生理因素和反应能力等；道路特性，如道路的数量、质量、道路增长速度与交通量增长速度的关系等；交通量；汽车行车速度；道路通行能力等。调查研究这些交通特性，是为了揭示交通规律，据以编制交通规划，设计道路线形和实施交通管理。②交通规划。在调查研究交通现状，预测未来的人口、社会经济和土地利用对交通的需要的基础上，制定交通规划。它是城市或区域总体规划中的一个组成部分。③交通流。即车辆在道路上连续行驶形成的车流，可用流量、流速和密度(道路单位长度上含有车辆的数量，单位是辆／千米)3个参数来描述。研究道路交通流的运行规律，可用于分析道路和各种交通设施的使用效果，并提出改进措施。④道路线形设计。包括道路平面线形和纵断面线形、道路交叉口、道路景观、道路出入口和道路渠化设计。设计方针是保证行人和车辆安全、畅通。⑤交通管理。主要研究如何采用一系列手段正确处理交通中人、车、路三者间的关系，保证交通安全，减少交通公害。⑥交通安全。研究交通事故发生的规律性及产生的原因，从而提出保障交通安全的措施。⑦交通公害。指机动车辆排放废气和产生噪声及振动而造成的对公众的危害。研究防治公害的措施日益受到重视。
