张家界国家森林公园 中国著名砂岩峰柱地貌和天然森林公园区。位于湖南省大庸市东北武陵源区。辖张家界、天子山、索溪峪毗连地域，处于澧水二级支流索水的上游；从海拔1334米的"兔儿望月"山顶到325米的索溪峪口,相差1009米。地面由西南向东北和缓倾斜，周围由砂页岩与灰岩岭脊环绕，其间面积约100平方公里的台状剥夷面上,发育千崖万壑，瑰奇多姿的砂岩峰林峡谷地貌，被誉为湘西北武陵山区的风景明珠。 这一地区地层较古老,分布晚古生代中晚泥盆世(距今约3.8亿年前)的滨海碎屑堆积，经漫长复杂的成岩过程，形成一套主要由肉红色与灰白色石英岩状砂岩、石英砂岩、夹薄层粉砂岩及砂质页岩组合的岩层，胶结紧固致密，具有脆性块状结构；厚度达500余米,由于缺失盖层，大部裸露地表。燕山运动使湘西北大面积隆起成为缓和舒展的褶皱陆地，这一地区即处于桑植复式向斜内的三官寺向斜往西南扬起封闭段。晚近又受新构造运动掀斜抬升的影响，西北边缘产生单斜构造，往中部及东南部则呈和缓倾斜状态，因而大片岩层产状基本接近水平，岩层顶部仍保持原始层面。在长期地壳运动过程中，岩层受应力作用逐渐发生破裂，目前可见有北东向、北西向和近东西向的几组垂直节理，为风化剥蚀提供条件。气候属季风型雨洪区,流水作用强烈,冬有霜雪寒冻。在以流水为主导，伴随重力崩塌和生物作用及温差变化等营力组合作用下，处于掀起和裸露部位的厚层平缓岩体不断遭受侵蚀切割而逐渐分崩离析、化整为零，形成现存的大小奇峰异石。地区内又有各式方山地形，并有众多的棱方状和塔式岩峰及高墙城垛式的峭壁，耸立在沟壑及寨堡边侧。天生桥、仙人桥高跨深涧之上，金鞭溪、十里画廊、百丈峡等均为幽深狭长的河谷。富有地区性的石英砂岩峰林特色，比中国其他地区的丹霞、喀斯特地貌显得独具一格。 张家界与索溪峪地区气候温暖湿润，植物繁茂，树种资源丰富。有珙桐、银杏、银鹊树、香果树等许多古稀珍贵树种；马醉木－黄山松常成岩峰峭壁建群种；巴东荚蒾－枫香、槭树－仿栗林、楠木林、复穗鹅掌柴－勾栗－黄杞－银木荷林、杜鹃－枹树或白栎林、多种润楠－稠李－槭树林等广布； 近期营造大片杉、 松、檫、臭椿等人工混交林；野生猕猴桃与多种中草药植物也很丰富。山林间还栖息有猕猴、林麝、岩羊、鼯鼠、灵猫、斑羚、苏门羚、大鲵、水獭及红腹角雉、长尾雉、锦鸡等珍禽异兽。张家界已辟为国家森林公园，索溪峪定为自然保护区。（见彩图）
