酸酐  包括两种:①无机酸酐(见酸性氧化物);②有机酸酐,即本文所述者,为羧酸的分子间或分子内失去一分子水所形成的衍生物(见酐)。含有两个相同酰基(R=R′)的酸酐称为单酐,如乙酸酐(CH3CO)2O、苯甲酸酐(C6H5CO)2O;含有两个不同酰基的酸酐称为混酐,如乙丙酐(R为CH3,R′为C2H5)。自然界存在的酸酐极少。存在于西班牙蝇中的斑蝥素是一种环酐(结构式如)。某些羧酸与磷酸形成的混酐则是生物体代谢中的重要物质。    甲酸酐尚未分离得到。其他低级酸酐为无色液体,具有不愉快的刺激性气味。高级的酸酐和芳酐为无味的固体。酸酐的沸点比相应的羧酸高;不溶于水,易溶于醚及其他一般有机溶剂。低级的酸酐遇水即缓慢水解成羧酸。一些常见的酸酐的物理常数见表。酸酐与酰卤类似,能发生水解、醇解和氨解等反应,但活性比酰卤稍差。      酸酐一般都可由酰氯与羧酸盐作用制得。但这种方法没有什么意义,因为酰氯可以代替酸酐使用。这两类化合物都可看成活化的羧酸。羧酸均可失水形成酸酐,特别适用于合成环状酸酐。芳烃的氧化可以制备一些工业上重要的酸酐,如顺丁烯二酸酐和邻苯二甲酸酐等。    酸酐是应用广泛的酰化剂,可用来合成各种酯和酰胺。乙酸酐用于制造纤维素乙酸酯,也用于染料、制药和香料工业。丁烯二酸酐是高分子化合物的重要单体,可与玻璃纤维一起制成玻璃钢(见玻璃纤维增强塑料)。邻苯二甲酸酐可制增塑剂、醇酸树脂、三苯甲烷染料等。
