美洲貘美洲獏美洲獏产于中南美洲。它体形肥壮,四肢粗短,吻长尾短,长相酷似黑猪。特别是它耳朵中间的头冠和颈上,有一撮短而直的长条鬃毛,好比长了一头童发,格外醒目,惹人喜爱。 因产地不同,可分为南美獏、中美獏和山獏,但它们的形状和生活习性大体相同,没有很大区别。南美獏是最普通的一种美洲獏,肩高90厘米左右,身长约2米,体重在150-200千克之间。它繁殖力强,3岁左右就能产仔,因而数量较多,主要分布在巴西、委内瑞拉、圭亚那、巴拉圭、秘鲁、阿根廷等国家的热带密林中。美洲獏最长的寿命可达30年以上。中美獏生活在墨西哥南部至中美的巴拿马、危地马拉、洪都拉斯、尼加拉瓜等国家的热带林区。它繁殖力低,数量较少,寿命二三十年。山獏仅产于哥伦比亚、秘鲁和厄瓜多尔的安第斯山较寒冷的高山上,寿命较短,数量极少。因此,国际自然与自然资源保护联合会将中美獏和十分珍贵的山獏定为濒危级保护动物。 美洲獏是个素食者,以水生植物、树叶、灌木嫩芽、浆果和草为主食。它喜欢居住在热带稠密阴湿的原始森林、沼泽地和湖泊地带,把巢安置在水边灌木丛中,白天一般在窝内睡觉,夜间出来活动,寻找食物。它水性很好,善于游泳、潜水。它的听觉、嗅觉也十分敏锐,但性情拘谨,胆小如鼠,一发现险情或遇上敌手袭击,就立刻跃入水中躲避。美洲獏的nnerlink>虎、豹和蟒,由于大自然没有赐给它锋利的牙齿、尖锐的脚趾和坚硬的触角等保卫生命最起码的武器,所以只有采取入水逃命的消极办法,才得以顽强的生存下来,这确实是动物界中一个罕见的奇迹。世界上只有3个国家的11家动物园饲养展览中美獏,总数仅20多只。近10年来,仅繁殖过10多只。
