功功work物理学中的一个重要物理量。在力学中有机械功,在电学中有电功。通过作功,势能、动能、内能、电能等可以互相转换,从这个角度可定义功为能量转换的一种量度。机械功是施予物体的力在物体位移方向上的分力和位移的乘积,据此也有人定义机械功为力的空间累积效应的量度。在恒力F的作用下,平动物体的位移为S,而F和S的夹角为θ,则功W为FScosθ。在-90°<θ<90°,cosθ为正值,W也为正值,即力F作正功;90<θ<270°,cosθ为负值,W也为负值,则力F作负功;θ为90°或270°,即力F和位移S垂直时,F不作功。如F的大小、方向不断变化,则须用力的空间积分求功。当物体有转动或物体是弹性体时,物体上各点的位移不一致,则以力的作用点的位移为准。如汽车起动时,驱动的后轮不打滑,即轮胎与地面接触点无位移,地面对轮胎的摩擦力也不作功。功是标量,机械功是力和位移这两个矢量的标积。在国际单位制中,功的单位和能量、热量一致,都是焦耳。
