猫跳河  贵州省水电梯级开发的典型河流。乌江右岸支流。位于省境中部。因其下游狭窄,大猫(贵州对老虎的俗称)可跳石越峡,故称猫跳河。发源于安顺长山,流经平坝、清镇、修文等县,在杨桥汇入乌江。全长180公里,流域面积3195平方公里。红枫湖以上为上游,五里桥为中、下游分界。河口年均流量55.9立方米/秒,河流比降3.04‰。4~9月汛期流量占全年径流量的78%。河水暴涨暴落,洪枯流量变幅达938倍。流域碳酸盐岩层出露面积达70%,喀斯特发育。中、上游水系密集,呈树枝状,谷宽水缓,海拔多在1200~1400米,以峰林盆地、峰林谷地地貌为主;中、下游河谷深切成200~300米的峡谷,流急、滩多、支流稀少且常潜入地下,或在入口处形成瀑布,沿河常有大泉(暗河)汇入。一般海拔在700~1200米,相对高度可达300~500米以上。地貌以峰丛洼地、峰丛山地为主,沿岸多深邃竖井,落水洞,地下水深埋。猫跳河天然落差达549米,水能蕴藏量丰富,干流达20.42万千瓦,加之沿河有多处适宜修建中型电站的坝址,自1958~1974年已先后进行了6个梯级开发,共装机23.9万千瓦,是中国强喀斯特发育区进行梯级水电开发的成功典型。(见彩图)
