中学为体西学为用中学为体西学为用中国近代有关中学与西学关系的命题。张之洞在《劝学篇·设学》中提出，“中学为体”，是强调以中国的纲常名教作为决定国家社会命运的根本；“西学为用”，是主张采用西方资本主义国家的近代科学技术，效仿西方国家在教育、赋税、武备、律例等方面的一些具体措施，举办洋务新政，以挽回清王朝江河日下的颓势。19世纪70～80年代，早期改良派曾提出“主以中学，辅以西学”的口号，主要目的是鼓励人们向西方学习，反对顽固守旧。到了19世纪末，发生了尖锐激烈的旧学与新学、中学与西学之争。守旧的封建顽固派坚决反对西学，对西方资本主义国家的一切事物都采取仇视和排斥态度。而资产阶级维新派则积极提倡西学，认为中国不但应当学习西方国家的科学技术，更要效仿它们的议院制，改革封建君主专制制度。张之洞强调“中学为内学，西学为外学；中学治身心，西学应世事”。表面上是要“新旧兼学”，实际上是站在旧学、中学一边，反对接受西方资产阶级政治伦理学说。
