准晶准晶是具有准周期平移格子构造的固体,其中的原子常呈定向有序排列,但不作周期性平移重复,其对称要素包含与晶体空间格子不相容的对称(如5次对称轴)。直至20世纪80年代,人们把固体材料分为两大类,一类是晶体,其中原子作规则排列;另一类是非晶体,原子混乱排列。德国科学家在1850年就总结出晶体的平移周期性,即晶体中原子的三维周期排列方式可以概括为14种空间点阵。受这种平移对称约束、晶体的旋转对称只能有1、2、3、4、6等5种旋转铀。这种限制就像生活中不能用正五角形拼块铺满地面一样,晶体中原子排列是不允许出现5次或6次以上的旋转对称性的。1984年中国、美国、法国和以色列等国家的学者几乎同时在淬冷合金中发现了存在有5次对称轴,确证这些合金相是具有长程定向有序,而没有周期平移有序的一种封闭的正20面体相,并称之为准晶体。以后又陆续发现了具有8次、10次、12次对称的准晶结构。目前在自然界中还没有发现准晶体。5次对称性和准晶的发现对传统晶体学产生了强烈的冲击,它为物质微观结构的研究增添了新的内容,为新材料的发展开拓了新的领域。
